Unas: Slayer of the Gods

Unas was the last Pharaoh of the fifth dynasty. His reign has been dated between 2375 to 2345 BC. It is believed that he had two wives, yet he fathered no sons.

He took the throne at a time when poor administration was rotting away the royal foundations. While outwardly showing off their superiority with great monuments, beneath the surface the day to day running of royal and religious duties was failing. At Neferirkara's sun temple, for example, a consignment of bread was due each day. In one year, for four days no bread was delivered, but on the fifth day seventy batches – five days worth - were delivered in one go. On the sixth day the delivery seemed to have been written off. It may seem little, but when the state was trying to present itself as ordered and structured yet could not provide such basics as bread, then the cracks were too deep to be plastered over.

Not that Unas was concerned. He was too busy reinventing traditions. He had built for him a small pyramid at a site placed in one corner of Netjerikhet's step pyramid – a sure sign that he was acknowledging the past. But the interior of the tomb was what was amazing. Where should a god rest when their earthly body dies? Why, in a tomb decorated to look like the universe at it's creation, of course. His coffin was painted black, while the ceiling was painted a deep blue and studded with sparkling stars to represent the universe. And around the sarcophagus was an alabaster representation of a primitive shrine believed to have been present at the dawn of time. Quiet a departure from the plain, undecorated tombs that went before.

Most novel of all was the text painted on columns in the burial chamber and ante-room. These are called the pyramid texts and consist of spells, incantations, hymns and prayers designed to aid Unas on his journey through the afterlife.

What is shocking about these pyramid texts is not that Unas commands obedience from his subjects, but complete obedience from the gods as well. As far as Unas was concerned he had might as well as right on his side. Brief excepts from the “Cannibal Hymn”:

A god who lives on his fathers,
who feeds on his mothers...

Unas is the bull of heaven

Who rages in his heart,

Who lives on the being of every god,

Who eats their entrails
When they come, their bodies full of magic

From the Isle of Flame...

Unas is he who eats people, who lives on the gods...

Unas is he who eats their magic, swallows their spirits:
Their big ones are for his morning meal,
Their middle ones for his evening meal,
Their little ones for his night meal,
Their old males and females for his burnt offering.

This was certainly not the first reference to cannibalism in Old Kingdom texts; what is shocking is the method Unas uses to achieve divinity and immortality: by turning on the gods, slaying, and then eating them. This harkens back to pre-dynastic days when the belief in contagious magic existed. The pre-dynastic Egyptians believed that when you ate something you took in part of that creature's attributes. So, for example, eating a boar would make you strong and courageous, deer would make you fleet of foot, and snakes would make you cunning. Likewise, eating a fallen warrior would give you some of their skills in warfare. Unas, similarly, feasts on the spirits of the gods, and thus becomes the greatest in heaven.
