Fire at Cairo vaccination center kills one, injures five

The fire broke out at a vaccination production and dissemination facility in the western Cairo district of Dokki

Ahram Online , Sunday 28 Dec 2014

At least one was killed and five others wounded after a fire broke out early Sunday at a state-owned vaccination and drugs facility in western Cairo, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The fire at one of the building's storehouses caused an explosion that rang out in Al-Dokki, across the Nile from downtown Cairo, sending clouds of smoke flying into the air.

Initial investigations show that the fire broke out after a gas tank exploded.

Health ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said earlier that the injuries were mostly caused by suffocation.

Egypt to put critic of Muslim ritual of slaughtering sheep on trial

Fatima Naoot described the Eid Al-Adha tradition of slaughtering sheep as the 'greatest massacre committed by human beings,' saying humans use religion to justify their lust for killing

Ahram Online , Saturday 27 Dec 2014

Egyptian prosecutors referred Friday journalist and writer Fatima Naoot to a misdemeanors court on charges of disdaining religion, after she was critical of the Muslim Eid Al-Adha tradition of slaughtering sheep.

The trial will start 28 January.

In October, Naoot described in a post on her Facebook account Eid Al-Adha's tradition of slaughtering sheep as the "greatest massacre committed by human beings."

"[It's] a yearly massacre because a good man once had a nightmare about his good son, and although the nightmare has passed for the good man and his son, the [sheep] pay their lives as a price for that holy nightmare," Naoot's also wrote in an article in the daily El-Masry El-Youm.

During questioning, Naoot, an outspoken secular figure, admitted writing the Facebook post but denied that her aim was to insult Islam. Naoot argued that humans justified their lust for culling and enjoying the smell of cooking game by attempting to bestow a divine meaning to their actions.

Eid Al-Adha is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year.

It honours the willingness of the prophet Abraham to sacrifice his young first-born son Ismail as an act of submission to God’s command, before God intervened to provide Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice instead.

Legislation which criminalise disdaining religion dates back to the regime of ousted president Hosni Mubarak.

The law was added in 1982 to the penal code stipulates prison sentences of 6 months to five years and fines of LE500 to LE1000 to anyone who uses religion to promote, through speech, writing or any other medium, extremist ideas with the aim of spreading discord or to belittle or disdain one of the monotheistic religions or their different sects, or to harm national unity.

Application of the law significantly rose under the rule of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) 2011 - 2012 and ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi 2012 - 2013.

A report issued by the Egyptian Initiative on Personal Rights (EIPR) in September 2013 revealed that since the 25 January 2011 revolution until the end of 2012, a total of 63 citizens, both Muslims and Christians, were charged with disdaining religion.

New confirmed case of bird flu in Egypt, brings number to 23

Out of 23 cases, 10 have died, eight have recovered, and five are currently being treated

Ahram Online , Saturday 27 Dec 2014

new case of infection with bird flu (H5N1 virus) has been confirmed by the health ministry in Egypt's Menoufiya governorate Saturday, making the total number of confirmed cases in 2014 reach 23.

The 23rd case is of a 30-year old woman who was admitted to hospital on 24 December, with symptoms of fever, coughing, sore throat and difficulty in breathing.

Out of the 23 cases, 10 have died, eight have been treated, and five are currently undergoing treatment.

The Egyptian health ministry reiterated its calls for people who handle poultry to seek immediate treatment once flu symptoms start to appear, while strictly advising them to cover their noses and mouths when they deal with any kind of domesticated birds.

In Egypt, most cases of bird flu have been identified in rural areas, where villagers tend to raise poultry in their homes, increasing exposure to live or dead infected birds.

Bird flu first appeared in Egypt in 2006.

Two Egyptian troops killed in Sinai bombing

Roadside bomb hits an army vehicle in North Sinai, killing two personnel and wounding another

Ahram Online , Friday 26 Dec 2014

A military officer and a solider were killed late Thursday when a bomb struck an Egyptian army vehicle in the volatile Sinai Peninsula, a hotbed of Islamist insurgency, the army has said.

Another solider was injured in the attack that occurred south of the North Sinai town of Al-Arish, army spokesman Mohamed Samir added in a statement.

The area has been the scene of a series of attacks by Islamist militants against security forces.

Egypt's army has struggled to crush militant violence based in the peninsula that has spiked since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and at times expanded to mainland cities, including Cairo.

The army began late October demolishing houses and clearing residents in the Sinai border city of Rafah to set up a buffer zone, after 31 soldiers were killed in two militant attacks in Al-Arish, the deadliest violence on Egyptian troops in recent times.

Authorities said the move is aimed at deterring militant infiltration and arms smuggling
