CAIRO -- Egypt will soon reveal the results of DNA tests made on the
world's most famous ancient king, the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun, to answer
lingering mysteries over his lineage, said the antiquities department Sunday.

Speaking at a conference, archaeology chief Zahi Hawas said he would announce
the results of the DNA tests and the CAT scans on Feb. 17. The results will be
compared to those made of King Amenhotep III, who may have been Tutankamun's
grandfather.
The effort is part of a wider program to check the DNA of hundreds of mummies
to determine their identities and family relations. The program could help
determine Tutankhamun's family lineage, which has long been a source of mystery.

The identity of Tut's parents is not firmly known. Many experts believe he is
the son of Akhenaten, the 18th Dynasty pharaoh who tried to introduce monotheism
to ancient Egypt almost 3,500 years ago, and one of Akhenaten's queens, Kiya.
But others have suggested he was the son of a lesser known pharaoh who followed
Akhenaten.
Tutankhamun was one of the last kings of Egypt's 18th Dynasty and ruled
during a crucial, turmoil-filled period when Akhenaten's monotheism was ended
and powers were returned to the priests of ancient Egypt's multiple deities.

Hawass has announced ambitious plans for DNA tests on Egyptian mummies,
including tests on all royal mummies and the nearly two dozen unidentified ones
stored in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He has said the tests may show that some
royal mummies on display are not who archaeologists thought them to be.
One of his top goals is to find the mummy of Nefertiti, Akhenaten's wife, the
queen legendary for her beauty.
Hawass has long rejected DNA testing on Egyptian mummies by foreign experts,
and only recently allowed such projects on condition they be done exclusively by
Egyptians. A $5 million DNA lab was created at the Egyptian Museum, with funding
from the Discovery Channel.
Sunday's statement also said a robot would be sent into the Great Pyramid of
Khufu to discover the secrets of its hidden passageways.
In a widely publicized television show in September 2002, a robot designed by
the National Geographic explored some air shafts in the pyramid of Khufu,
discovering secret doors with copper handles.

CAIRO - One of the great remaining mysteries from ancient Egypt, the ancestry
of the boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun, may soon be solved, the country's antiquities
supremo hinted on Sunday.
Zahi Hawass said he has scheduled a news conference for February 17 in the
Cairo Museum.
The announcement will be "about the secrets of the family and the affiliation
of Tutankhamun, based on the results of the scientific examination of the
Tutankhamun mummy following DNA analysis," Hawass said.
The tomb of the boy king, who reigned from the age of nine and died under as
yet unknown circumstances at about 19, was unearthed by British archaeologists
in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, causing an international sensation.
Egypt's antiquities authorities said in August 2008 that they had taken DNA
samples from Tutankhamun's mummy and from two foetuses found in his tomb, to
determine whether the still-born children had been fathered by the boy king.
Tutankhamun achieved worldwide fame because of the stunning funerary treasure
found in his tomb, including an 11-kilo (24.2-pound) solid gold death mask
encrusted with lapis lazuli and semi-precious stones.
Like his ancestry, the circumstances of Tutankhamun's death remain a mystery.
He is believed to have reigned from around 1333 BC to 1324 BC.

Hawass: Egypt to make major archaeology announcements

CAIRO: The Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council for Antiquities Zahi Hawass said that the next three months will witness the announcement of major archaeological discoveries. He added that more importantly, the revealing of information about the lineage of the most famous Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun (1355-1346 BC) would happen this month.

Hawass said in an interview with AFP that “Egypt will announce the secrets of the family and lineage of Tutankhamun on the 17th of February in the Egyptian Museum through the announcement of results of scientific tests conducted on the mummy of the king after the completion of DNA analysis and CT scan.”

He explained that there would be a “comparison of these tests and examination tests conducted on a number of royal mummies to see the young king’s family and its relationship to King Amenhotep III (1410-1372 BC), father of King Amenhotep IV, known as Akhenaten, Pharaoh of monotheism, who called for worshiping one and only god ‘Aten’ and his successor on the throne Tutankhamen, who was believed to be his son. ”

Hawass said “it was known that the mummy of Akhenaten was not found, until now between the royal mummies.”

Hawass said that the restoration of antiquities, undertaken by the Council “include all kinds of antiquities and history of Egypt, the Pharaonic, Coptic, Jewish and Muslim, and that are entirely within the Egyptian cultural heritage.”

In that framework, “in the coming days, there will be the finalization of the monastery of St. Anthony, the founder of monasticism at the global level” and said that this monastery, “one of the oldest Coptic monasteries in Al Zafrana area and the cost of restoration, reached 80 million pounds ($15.5 million) as well as the completion of the restoration work in the Hanging Church, one of the oldest and rarest churches in Egypt and the world and built up one of the towers of Cairo, built by the Romans.”

Hawass added that Egypt is currently working on the “restoration of Jewish Temples, including three temples and the restoration of five other temples would start soon.”

Hawass said that the conference, called for by Egypt, to host 30 countries to determine the list of its stolen artifacts and monuments which were stolen during the period of colonialism “will be an important step in the restoration of these monuments and to return it to its original countries, and we will give the basic Egyptian expertise in this area, which is an important experience.”

He stressed that Egypt is working to “restore the five basic relics and monuments , a rare statue of Nefertiti (bust) and the Rosetta Stone and a statue of the architects of the pyramid of Khufu, Khafre, and the Dome of the Zodiac.”

Egipto se prepara para desvelar al mundo el origen de Tutankamón

El Cairo, 13 de febrero, RIA Novosti. Investigadores egipcios presentarán dentro de poco los resultados de una prueba ADN realizada con la momia de Tutankamón, niño proclamado faraón a la edad de nueve años y que gobernó Egipto durante casi una década hace más de tres milenios, escribe hoy la prensa local.

"Estamos dispuestos a desvelar el misterioso origen de Tutankamón a partir de los tests ADN", anunció Zahi Hawass, presidente del Consejo Superior egipcio de Antigüedades.

Los resultados de un estudio que Egipto llevó a cabo por cuenta propia se darán a conocer el próximo miércoles en el Museo de El Cairo donde se exponen las joyas descubiertas en la tumba de Tutankamón, cerca de Luxor, por el arqueólogo británico Hovard Carter, en 1922.

Un halo de misterio rodeó durante décadas el origen del faraón niño y su muerte prematura. Algunos investigadores consideran que es un hijo de la Nefertiti, la bella reina de Egipto. Entre posibles padres de Tutankamón se mencionan el faraón Amenhotep III (Akenatón) y su corregente y sucesor Semenejkara.

Expertos occidentales ya dieron a entender ya que las pruebas ADN son insuficientes para determinar con plena exactitud la genealogía del faraón niño.
